Our mission at Breaking Free is, “to provide the highest quality education, prevention, and counseling services focused on drug and alcohol abuse, child abuse, family relationships, mental health and wellness.” Education and prevention are essential but often overlooked elements of our mission. In recent years healthcare and human services have come to recognize the power of prevention and how important it is to build prevention into our lives throughout our lifespan.

 

In the summer of 2011, the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council announced the release of the National Prevention Strategy, a comprehensive plan that will help increase the number of Americans who are healthy at every stage of life. The National Prevention Strategy emphasizes that prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives — including where and how we live, learn, work, and play — and that everyone has a role in creating a healthier nation.

 

At Breaking Free we are committed to the prevention of substance abuse, child abuse and mental illness and work every day in schools and community sites throughout our community to help young people of all ages and their parents develop and maintain nurturing relationships. Through the use of classroom programs like “Too Good for Drugs” or “Life Skills” or parenting programs such as the “Nurturing Parenting Program” we are doing our part to promote healthy living through prevention.
