Family, Parenting & Child Abuse Programs and Services

Did you know...

•  Over 500 children each year are involved in Juvenile and Probate Courts in Kane County for abuse or neglect
•  3 million child abuse cases are reported each year in the United States, but...
9 million is estimated to be the actual number since many of the cases
   are under-reported

•  Some of the most effective ways to prevent child abuse and neglect is through parent training programs focused on child rearing, parent and child relationship and the family environment. (ref. World Health Organization)

Breaking Free’s Family Based services served 1,222 individuals during our last fiscal year. We prevent child abuse by delivering the Nurturing Parenting Program, a nationally-recognized research-based curriculum that develops strong nurturing relationships within families. We work with schools, churches and community agencies to make this program available to parents and children throughout the area.

The following specialized programs and services are available to you and your family:

•  Parenting Education programs
•  Specialized parenting education programs for families in recovery
•  Specialized parenting education programs for DCFS involved families
•  School-based parenting programs for pregnant and parenting teens

The Nurturing Parenting Program is an evidence based curriculum that strengthens parent support and skills in the following five areas:

1.  Appropriate Expectations
2.  Empathy
3.  Alternatives to Corporal Punishment
4.  Appropriate Parent-Child Roles
5.  Power and Independence

The program also strengthens six protective factors that have been identified as being crucial in the prevention and treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect:

1.  Parental Resilience
2.  Social Connections
3.  Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
4.  Concrete Support in Time of Need
5.  Social Emotional Competence of Children
6.  Healthy Parent Child Relationships

The world that children are growing up in is different from the world that their parents grew up in. The Nurturing Parenting Program is like an instruction manual for raising children, providing answers to questions that we all have, allowing our children to grow up in safe and nurturing homes.
